Southern Sonoma County Resource Conservation District (SSCRCD) in cooperation with the Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Alliance (SVVGA) conducted various environmental enhancement demonstration projects with vineyards in Sonoma Valley. With grants from CALFED, these two organizations worked together to conduct demonstration projects emphasizing various practices for vineyard management. These practices included natural stream bank protection and revegetation with native plant species, rock-lined drainage ditches, and subsurface drainage. In an effort to encourage biological controls of insects and rodents, owl boxes, bluebird boxes, and raptor roosts were placed in vineyards. Experimental plans were devised to construct a “dry well” to conserve rainwater by containing it from rooftops and letting it trickle back into the aquifer. Vegetative enhancement of a pond area was included in the list of projects. All of these projects were designed by the vineyard managers and landowners. Tours were offered to the public to increase their understanding of the work that the vineyard owners were doing on their property. More funding has been obtained to offer this cost share opportunity to vineyards for years to come. For more information call Chris Taylor at (707) 794-1242 x 3.
